Fire Extinguishers
What is a Fire EXTINGUISHER?
A fire extinguisher is a portable, pressurised device containing water, foam, powder, or CO₂. It tackles small fires by cooling them, smothering oxygen, or interrupting the chemical reaction. Fire extinguishers come in different types, with each one designed for specific fire classes such as solids, liquids, gases, and electrical fires. Colour coding identifies each type and helps users choose the correct extinguisher. Each unit also includes a handle and nozzle, allowing the extinguishing agent to be directed at the base of the fire.
uk Standards and installation
The Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 and the BS 5306 series require buildings to provide and maintain fire extinguishers.
BS 5306-8 covers the selection and positioning of fire extinguishers. Meanwhile, BS 5306-3 focuses on inspection and maintenance requirements.
Extinguishers should be selected based on the fire risks within the building. They should also be positioned along escape routes and near fire hazards. In addition, they must remain clearly visible, easily accessible, and
installed at the correct height. Poor selection or positioning reduces effectiveness and can compromise safety.
