AOVS
Automatic Opening Vents
What is an aov?
Automatic Opening Vents, often known as AOVs, are systems designed to open windows, roof hatches, or louvres during a fire to release smoke and heat. As a result, they help keep escape routes clear for occupants and firefighters, improve
visibility, and support safe evacuation.
AOVs activate through smoke detectors or the building’s fire alarm system. They play an important role in controlling the movement of smoke and heat during a fire. In particular, they form a key part of a building’s fire strategy
in areas such as corridors, stairwells, and large open spaces, where smoke build up can pose a serious risk.
UK Standards and Compliance
AOV systems must be designed, installed, and maintained in line with UK fire safety regulations.
Building Regulations Approved Document B provides guidance on smoke ventilation requirements within buildings, including the use of AOVs to protect escape routes such as stairwells and corridors.
Where AOVS are used
AOVs are commonly installed in areas where smoke could build up quickly and affect safe evacuation.
Typical locations include stairwells, corridors, and lobbies that form part of escape routes. In addition, designers often use AOVs in atriums and large open spaces, where smoke needs to vent at high level. They also support
smoke ventilation in other enclosed areas where natural airflow is required.
Further guidance is provided by British Standards including BS 9991 for residential buildings and BS 9999 for non-residential buildings, which outline best practice for fire safety and smoke control systems.
Referencing these standards helps ensure AOV systems are compliant and form part of an effective life safety strategy without compromising building design.
What We Offer
Regular testing and maintenance are essential. Routine checks confirm that the system responds correctly to smoke detection and that control panels, actuators, vents, and manual controls work as intended. These checks also help identify faults early. Maintaining all components in good working order ensures smoke ventilation performs as designed.
It is also important to keep records of all inspections, testing, and maintenance. These support ongoing compliance with UK fire safety requirements and form part of the building’s fire safety documentation.
At AWB and Son, we provide professional inspection, testing, and maintenance services for AOV systems in line with current UK guidance. Our engineers carry out scheduled servicing, functional testing, and system checks. They identify any issues and give clear recommendations for remedial action. With detailed reporting and ongoing support, we ensure your smoke ventilation systems remain safe, compliant, and reliable when needed most.
By choosing AWB, you invest in dependable fire protection that meets the highest industry standards, safeguarding lives and property with precision and care .
