Legionella Risk Assessment
What is it?
A Legionella risk assessment is an essential process that helps identify and evaluate potential sources of Legionella bacteria in a specific environment. This assessment typically involves examining water systems, such as cooling towers, hot tubs, and plumbing systems, to determine the likelihood of Legionella growth and transmission.
Legionella bacteria, found in water droplets, can cause health risks like Legionnaires’ disease (severe pneumonia) and Pontiac fever (milder respiratory infection).
Legionella thrives and grows in water systems or stagnant water. By conducting a thorough risk assessment, organisations can implement effective control measures to minimise the risk of Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks .
HOW OFTEN SHOULD A LEGIONELLA RISK ASSESSMENT BE REVIEWED?
It is essential to periodically review and revise the risk assessment to uphold ongoing safety measures and regulatory compliance. It is recommended to update risk assessments every 2 years, at a minimum.
Reasons for reassessment may involve:
Changes in the water system or its usage
Changes in the use of the building in which the water system is installed
Availability of new information about risks or control measures
Results of checks indicating that the control measures are no longer effective
Changes to key personnel
Detection of a case of legionnaires’ disease/legionellosis associated with the system .
