Legionella Risk Assessment

Whats is a Legionella Risk Assessment?

A Legionella Risk Assessment is a systematic evaluation conducted to identify and assess the risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria in water systems. This assessment is crucial for the prevention of Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially severe form of pneumonia caused by inhaling water droplets containing the bacteria.

What is involved?

Identifying Potential Sources: Determining areas where Legionella bacteria could grow and spread, such as cooling towers, hot and cold water systems, and spa pools.

Evaluating Control Measures: Assessing the effectiveness of current measures in place to control the growth and spread of bacteria, including temperature control, disinfection, and regular maintenance.

Assessing Susceptibility: Understanding who might be at risk, particularly vulnerable individuals like the elderly, smokers, or those with weakened immune systems.

Documenting Findings: Recording the results of the assessment, including any identified risks and recommendations for improvement.

Implementing and Reviewing Control Measures: Ensuring that appropriate measures are in place, regularly reviewed, and updated as needed to maintain safety.

Overall, the goal of a Legionella Risk Assessment is to ensure a safe environment by minimizing the risk of Legionella exposure.

How often should a Legionella Risk Assessment be reviewed?

It is essential to periodically review and revise the risk assessment to uphold ongoing safety measures and regulatory compliance. It is recommended to update risk assessments every 2 years, at a minimum.

Reasons for reassessment may involve:

  • Changes in the water system or its usage
  • Changes in the use of the building in which the water system is installed
  • Availability of new information about risks or control measures
  • Results of checks indicating that the control measures are no longer effective
  • Changes to key personnel
  • Detection of a case of legionnaires’ disease/legionellosis associated with the system.
