Legionella Risk Assessment

What is it?

A Legionella risk assessment is an essential process that helps identify and evaluate potential sources of Legionella bacteria in a specific environment. This assessment typically involves examining water systems, such as cooling towers, hot tubs, and plumbing systems, to determine the likelihood of Legionella growth and transmission.

Legionella bacteria, found in water droplets, can cause health risks like Legionnaires’ disease (severe pneumonia) and Pontiac fever (milder respiratory infection).

Legionella thrives and grows in water systems or stagnant water. By conducting a thorough risk assessment, organisations can implement effective control measures to minimise the risk of Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks

At AWB & Son, our legionella risk assessments surpass mere compliance to safeguard your water systems. Our customised assessment conducted by certified risk assessors who emphasise quality to adhere to industry regulations, giving you a peace of mind.  This will include the following:

💧Responsibilities of management, including the name of the competent person.

💧Competence and training of key personnel.

💧Details of any identified potential risk sources.

💧Any means of preventing the risk or controls in place to control risks.

💧Monitoring, inspection and maintenance procedures.

💧Water system drawings and a list of all water- related assets

💧Details of the ongoing control scheme.

💧Identification of the sentinel outlet

HOW OFTEN SHOULD A LEGIONELLA RISK ASSESSMENT BE REVIEWED?

It is essential to periodically review and revise the risk assessment to uphold ongoing safety measures and regulatory compliance. It is recommended to update risk assessments every 2 years, at a minimum.

Reasons for reassessment may involve:

💧Changes in the water system or its usage

💧Changes in the use of the building in which the water system is installed

💧Availability of new information about risks or control measures

💧Results of checks indicating that the control measures are no longer effective

💧Changes to key personnel

💧Detection of a case of legionnaires’ disease/legionellosis associated with the system .
