Fire Damper Testing, Remedials & Installation

What is a Fire Damper?

A fire damper is a crucial device designed to prevent the passage of fire and smoke through ventilation ducts. These dampers remain open thanks to either a thermal or fusible link, which melts at pre-determined temperature often around 72 degrees celsius or is motorised as part of a fire and smoke control system. In the UK alone, it is estimated that approximately 300,000 dampers are installed annually.

Regrettably, issues such as poor workmanship, installation challenges, and inadequate maintenance can render these dampers ineffective.

At AWB we are accredited specialists dedicated to ensuring your building provides a safe and high-quality environment, protecting both occupants and the structure from fire hazards.

Where to Find a Fire Damper

Due to the placement of ventilation ductwork, essential testing of fire dampers is often overlooked.

Fire dampers are typically located where ductwork and ventilation systems traverse fire compartment walls and floors.

Why Do We Test?

During testing, our engineers will manually release the fusible link to assess its mechanism. This is vital as the closure of the damper is what prevents the spread of smoke and fire during an emergency.

What else do we check?
  • Adequate access points
  • Accumulation of dust and debris
  • Damaged or collapsed blades
  • Non-functioning cassettes
  • Corroded or jammed springs
  • Correct install method
  • Suitable firestopping into the compartment
  • Presence of breakaway joints to connecting ducting

To ensure compliance with accurate fire damper testing records, our team will provide a comprehensive testing report complete with photographic evidence for your files.

What We Offer

We offer fire damper survey, remedial, and installation services.

Surveys

This is where our diligent team of engineers complete a survey to ensure the damper is within the Fire Safety Regulations. These standards are a legal requirement to ensure the safety of people and the buildings. The report comes clear and concise, highlighting any issues. All located dampers will also be pinpointed on layout plans using Boris Software.

Remedials

We provide high-quality services to replace, repair, and remediate any dampers that fall short of legal standards. Our team addresses mechanical faults and issues with adjacent fire breaks to bring them back into compliance. The team are highly skilled and experienced in finding the most compliant and cost effective solutions.
