The Golden Rules of Firestopping.

Categories:

Firestopping plays a vital role in new fire safety regulations and practices. BESA has nine ‘Golden Rules’ of firestopping that should be followed.

1. Gaurentee an early engagement with firestopping manufacturers/specialists.

2. Review all fire strategy documents and plans in alliance with the M&E specifications

3. Identify all service types passing through compartment floors or walls this includes any insulation products. Establish the space required to install and firestop the services.

4. Follow the ‘design’ process for penetration seals.

5. Select only the firestopping products that are third party certified by a UKAS accredited organisation. The products should be certified or CE marked and tested using relevant standards.

6. Select one firestopping manufactuer throughout the project, products from different manufacturers should not be mixed unless there is clear test evidence to validate their use.

7. Request copies of the third party ceritifcation from the manufacturers. These should be reviewed by a qualifed person to ensure the field of application is relevant for the siutation.

8. Ensure the installers of ALL service penetration seals are third party certified by an organisation like: IFC, FIRAS, LPCB etc.

9. Implement a structured inspection plan that includes photographic evidence as the work proceeds.

Here at AWB and Son we implement these nine rules into all of our firestopping practices.
